Hi there! I’m Mara – owner, author, cook and chief dogsbody of Voodoo Kitchen. I am a not-very-grown-up, self-taught foodie with a long-suffering husband and a very spoiled cat, and I am interested in just about anything that’s food-related.
I started this blog back in 2006 as a bit of a lark and I’ve had so much fun! When I made my very first post, I didn’t even have a camera – it’s been a learning experience all the way as I’ve tried to improve my writing and photography as well as my cooking.
But now, I think, it’s time for this blog is to go beyond basic recipes and provide a more advanced and in-depth look at good food, techniques and cuisines from around the world. The recipes I give in this blog assume that you already know how to handle a knife, understand basic cooking terms and methods and have a basic minimum of equipment at your disposal. You don’t have to have fancy equipment to cook well, and I can’t help thinking that sometimes the latest whiz-bang gadgets can often be a hindrance rather than a help – the saying “When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail” springs to mind. That said, I have somewhat of an addiction to chef’s knives, but I’ll try not to let it get in my way!
One thing I really do appreciate is feedback of any flavour, so if I’ve made an error or haven’t been clear when describing something then I’d be very happy for you to let me know. Of course, if you feel a sudden urge to let me know that I’ve done something brilliant, that doesn’t go astray either.
So let’s kick on and have some fun!
